The Japan Business Federation has altered the opening day of job seeking period every year recently.  But in fact many companies give unofficial offers before the period.  Some companies even demand prospects to give up other companies in exchange for the job offer on the spot.

Japan’s job market for new graduates is open for a limited time…

Big companies “officially” start giving job offers to senior students in June and most of the offers will be made during the month…yes, 9 months before they graduate.  But this is not to say they are too early.  In fact, they are late.  Some SMEs give offers 12-14 months in advance of graduation, in other words, during the studens’ junior year.

…because of a historical reason.

The reason stems back to the nation’s high growth period when companies rushed into securing graduates from prestigious universities, even junior or sophomore students.  This was seen as a social issue because students with job offers stopped studying and enjoyed a laid back life without having to worry about their future.  Thus Keidanren (the Japan Business Federation) prohibited member companies from recruiting students until the opening time comes.  It is more like a gentlemen’s agreement but not a law.

Tokyo is jacked by Young-In-Black

So, as a result, you will see a bunch of young folks, women and men, in a dark suit during the peak period (June this year) of job seeking.  You may wonder if a famous person passed away or something, but no.  This is the proper attire to walk on the safe side when visiting companies.  Some companies actually don’t require it, but this tacit “dress code” is still pervasive.

It’s tragic they have to be in a dark suit and a tie during the most uncomfortable, humid rainy season of the year.  Why do they still dress like that even if they are not required to do so?  Well, I assume students think big companies prefer smart and modest ones in the herd.

Everyone start working in the company on April 1st

ALL new employees fresh out of college start working for the companies from April 1st, which is the beginning of the school/fiscal year in Japan.  The school year begins on April 1st, so their first day of the first real work will begin on April first.  Very systematic.  Actually, the beginning of the April is another time of the year you perceive a bunch of “Young-In-Black.”

In a way, the 1st and 2nd year can be considered as a training period while they receive salary.  This is a part of the life time employment concept, which is not as prevalent as it used to be, but still very popular….
